# Contact Tags

> Create coloured team tags, assign them to contacts inline from the Contacts table or the contact detail panel, and filter your contact list by tag.

## What are Contact Tags?

Tags are coloured labels you attach to contacts — "VIP", "Warm lead", "Do not contact after 5pm", whatever helps your team segment and find people quickly. Tags are shared across your whole team: any tag a teammate creates appears in everyone's tag picker, and renaming or recolouring a tag updates it on every contact that carries it.

You'll find tags in two places on the **Contacts** page (under **Phone System** in the sidebar):

* **The Tags column** in the contacts table — each contact's tags show as coloured pills directly in the row.
* **The Tags field** in a contact's detail panel — open any contact to see the same pills alongside the rest of the record.

Both places use the same tag picker, so everything below applies to either.

## Assigning tags to a contact

Hover over the **Tags** cell of any contact row (or the **Tags** field in the detail panel). If the contact has no tags yet, an "Add tags" prompt appears with a small **+** icon. Click anywhere in the cell to open the tag picker.

The picker shows:

* A search box with the placeholder "Search or create tag...".
* A **Selected** group — tags already on this contact, each with a tick. Click one to remove it.
* An **Available** group — the rest of your team's tags, listed alphabetically. Click one to add it.
* A **Create new tag** option at the bottom.

You can toggle as many tags on and off as you like in one visit — there's no limit to how many tags a contact can carry. Changes save as you click; there's no separate save button.

Two shortcuts outside the picker:

* **Remove inline** — every tag pill has an **×**; click it to remove that tag from the contact without opening the picker.
* **Create from search** — if you search for a name that doesn't exist yet, the picker offers **Create "your text"**, which jumps straight to the create form with the name pre-filled.

Any tag you create from a contact's picker is assigned to that contact immediately.

There's currently no bulk-toolbar action for tagging many selected contacts at once — tags are assigned one contact at a time. To group contacts for calling, use lists instead (see [Contact bulk actions](/contacts/bulk-actions)).

**Who can assign tags?** You can change tags on contacts you created; the team owner can change tags on any contact. On contacts you can't edit, the tags display read-only.

## Creating a tag

Choose **Create new tag** in the picker (or **Create "your text"** from the search box). The **Create Tag** form asks for:

| Field | Description | Default |
| ------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------- |
| **Tag name** | The label shown on the pill. Required, up to 50 characters, and must be unique within your team — you'll see "A tag with this name already exists" if it isn't. Leading and trailing spaces are trimmed. | — |
| **Color** | One of 18 swatches: red, orange, amber, yellow, lime, green, emerald, teal, cyan, sky, blue, indigo, violet, purple, fuchsia, pink, rose, and grey. | Blue |

Click **Create** (or press Enter in the name field) to save. A "Tag created successfully" confirmation appears, and the new tag is available to your whole team.

## Renaming or recolouring a tag

In the tag picker, hover over any tag — selected or available — and click the pencil icon that appears beside it. The **Edit Tag** form opens with the same **Tag name** and **Color** fields, pre-filled with the tag's current values. Change either, then click **Update**.

Edits are team-wide: the tag's new name and colour apply to every contact that carries it, for the whole team. The same rules apply as when creating — names are limited to 50 characters and must stay unique within the team.

## Deleting a tag

Open the tag in the **Edit Tag** form (pencil icon), then click the red bin button next to **Update**. Deleting a tag:

* Removes it from **every contact** that carries it, across the whole team.
* Removes it from the tag picker and from the **Tags** filter options.

There is no confirmation step and the tag cannot be restored from the app, so check the tag's reach before deleting. If you only want a tag off one contact, click the **×** on that contact's pill instead.

## Filtering contacts by tag

Tags earn their keep in the table filters. On the **Contacts** page, click the filter icon in the table header (tooltip: **Add Filters**), click **Add filter**, and choose **Tags** as the column. Four operators are available:

| Operator | Shows contacts that... |
| ---------------- | ----------------------------- |
| **contains** | carry the selected tag |
| **not contains** | do not carry the selected tag |
| **empty** | have no tags at all |
| **not empty** | have at least one tag |

For **contains** and **not contains**, pick the tag from the value dropdown — it lists every team tag by name. Click **Apply filters** to run the filter; active filters appear as removable badges above the table.

Two ways to build on a tag filter:

* **Save it as a view** — click **Save View** to keep the filtered table as a named tab beside **All**, so "VIP" or "Callback requested" is always one click away. See [Contacts overview](/contacts/overview) for how saved views work.
* **Sort the column** — the **Tags** column header sorts contacts alphabetically by their tag names.

One limitation to note: the CSV download from the Contacts table does not include a tags column, so tag data stays inside the app.

## Next Steps

* [Contacts overview](/contacts/overview) — the Contacts table, saved views, and the detail panel where tags live.
* [Contact records](/contacts/records) — every field on a contact and how to edit them.
* [Contact bulk actions](/contacts/bulk-actions) — act on many selected contacts at once: add to a list, wash against the DNCR, or delete.
* [Lists](/lists/overview) — group contacts into lists that feed outbound batches.
