# Quickstart: Build & Test Your First AI Agent

> The shortest path from an empty account to a working voice agent — create a call script, hear it on a test call, publish it, put it on your number for inbound, place your first outbound call, and read the results.

## Overview

This guide takes you from a fresh Voxworks account to a working AI voice agent you've actually spoken to — and shows you where to see what happened afterwards. You'll:

1. **Create a call script** — with AI, from a template, by copying an existing script, or from scratch
2. **Place a test call** — in your browser or to your own phone
3. **Publish the script** so it can take real calls
4. **Assign your number** so inbound callers reach your agent
5. **Make your first outbound call** to a contact
6. **Read the results** — status, recording, summary, and transcript

Before you start, create your account at [app.voxworks.ai](https://app.voxworks.ai) and complete the welcome wizard — it verifies your mobile, creates your team workspace, and reserves an Australian phone number for you. The full walkthrough is at [Onboarding Walkthrough](/getting-started/onboarding). New users start on a **14-day free trial with 100 free minutes**, so everything below runs without payment — see [Free Trial](/getting-started/free-trial).

If you already generated and tested a script during onboarding, you can skim steps 1–2 and pick up at [publishing](#step-3--publish-your-script).

## Step 1 — Create a call script

A call script defines everything about your agent: what it says, the voice it speaks with, and what it should achieve on a call. In the sidebar under **Voice Agent Settings**, open **Call Scripts** and click **New Script**. The **Create New Script** dialog offers four ways to start:

| Option | What it does | Best for |
| -------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------- |
| **Generate with AI** | "Describe your script and let AI generate it for you" — a complete, working script built from your description. | The fastest first agent. |
| **From Template** | "Start with a pre-built template and customize it" — pick a template and a voice. | Common use cases with a proven structure. |
| **From Existing** | "Copy one of your existing scripts as a starting point." | Iterating on something you've already built. |
| **New Script** | "Start from scratch with a blank script." | Full control from an empty page. |

Select an option and click **Create**.

### Generate with AI (recommended)

The **Generate Script** form asks for:

| Field | Description |
| ------------------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Script Name | e.g., Appointment Booking |
| Call Direction | **Inbound** (your agent answers) or **Outbound** (your agent dials). |
| Contact Type | Who the agent talks to — e.g., Patient, Customer. |
| Voice | Pick and audition a voice — see the [Voice library](/voices/library). |
| Description | "Describe the script's goal, conversational pathways, and actions the assistant should take..." |
| Website (optional) | Voxworks visits the site to ground the script in your business context. |
| Knowledge Documents (optional) | Drag and drop files the agent should know about. |

Click **Generate** and watch the progress log while your script is built. When it finishes ("Your script has been generated and is ready to review."), click **Open Script** to land in the editor. See [AI Script Generation](/scripts/ai-generation) for details.

### From scratch

Choosing **New Script** opens a short form — **Script Name**, **Description**, **Call Type** (Inbound or Outbound), and **Voice** — then **Create & Continue** drops you into the editor with a blank script: "You'll be able to configure everything else on the next page."

Either way you end up in the script editor, with tabs for **Script**, **Guidelines**, **Policies**, **Knowledge Base**, **Data Collection**, **Post-Call Analysis**, and **Settings**. You don't need to touch any of them to continue this quickstart — see the [Script Editor Guide](/scripts/editor-guide) when you're ready to customise, and [Creating a Script](/scripts/creating-a-script) for a deeper look at the creation options.

## Step 2 — Place a test call

Now hear your agent. Click **Test Call** in the script editor toolbar — it's also available on each script's row on the **Call Scripts** page. From the editor, Voxworks first saves your changes as a draft and prepares that exact version for the call ("Saving your changes", "Finalising your test call"), so what you hear is precisely what's on your screen.

The **Test Call** dialog offers two **Call Options**:

| Option | How it works |
| -------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **In Browser** | "The call will be initiated directly in your browser." You talk to your agent through your computer's microphone and speakers — no phone involved. A **Hang Up** button ends the call. |
| **My Phone** | Voxworks rings the mobile number from your profile — it confirms "The call will be made to:" followed by your saved number (for example, +61 412 345 678). Answer it and talk to your agent on a real phone line. |

The first time you choose **My Phone**, you may be asked to set up your contact information — enter **Your Name** and **Phone Number**, then click **Save & Continue**. Click **Start Call** to begin.

One thing makes test calls safe to repeat:

* **No DNCR screening** — test calls ring your own phone, so they are not checked against the Do Not Call Register the way real outbound calls are (see [DNCR Compliance](/security/dncr-compliance)).

Talk to your agent, interrupt it, ask it questions — then adjust the script and test again. For everything else about testing (including how drafts and versions interact), see [Testing Your Script](/scripts/testing), [Test Calls](/calls/test-calls), and [Web Calls](/calls/web-calls).

***

## Step 3 — Publish your script

Drafts only ever run on test calls — they never answer or place real calls. To take your agent live, click **Publish** in the editor toolbar. The **Publish to production** dialog confirms: "This becomes the live version. All calls will be made with this script."

Your script now carries a **Live** version, and you can keep editing drafts freely without affecting it. Version numbers, history, and comparing versions are covered in [Versions & Publishing](/scripts/versions-and-publishing).

***

## Step 4 — Assign your number for inbound

If your script's Call Type is **Inbound**, put it on a phone number so real callers reach it. In the sidebar under **Phone System**, open **Numbers & Routing** and switch to the **Numbers** tab — "Inbound numbers and the scripts that answer them." You'll see the number reserved for you during onboarding.

On your number's row, click the script field (it shows **No script assigned** until you set one), choose your script from the **Select script...** dropdown, and confirm — you'll see "Script assignment updated successfully".

Now ring the number from any phone. Your agent answers — each number's row also shows a **Test** or **Live** environment badge, and on a **Live** number inbound calls always run the Live (published) version of the assigned script, never a draft, so if you change the script, publish again before expecting callers to hear the difference. See [Versions & Publishing](/scripts/versions-and-publishing) for exactly which version each kind of call runs. See [Numbers](/numbers/overview) for buying additional numbers and [Numbers & Routing Overview](/routing/overview) for how inbound routing fits together. To forward an existing business number to Voxworks instead, see [Forward Your Existing Number](/numbers/forward-existing-number).

## Step 5 — Make your first outbound call

Outbound calls go to a contact, so create one first if you have none: under **Phone System**, open **Contacts**, click **New Contact**, and save a name and phone number (your own second number, or a colleague's, is fine for a first run) — see [Contacts](/contacts/overview).

Then open **Call Log** and click **New Call** (also available from the Dashboard's **Actions** menu). The **Schedule New Call** dialog asks for:

| Field | Description | Default |
| -------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| Contact | Search and pick who to call ("Search contacts..."). | — |
| Call Script | The script the agent runs — pick an **Outbound** script. | — |
| Outbound Number (Optional) | The number the call is placed from. | **Use Default** — your team's default number. |
| Scheduled Time | When to place the call. | Now. |

Click **Schedule Call**. Calls scheduled for now enter the dispatch queue straight away; calls scheduled for later dial when their scheduled time arrives — see [Scheduling Calls](/calls/scheduling-calls) and [Dispatch & Concurrency](/calls/dispatch-and-concurrency).

**If the number is on the Do Not Call Register**, a **Do Not Call Register Warning** appears: "Only proceed if you have consent, an existing business relationship, or another valid exemption." Clicking **OK** records your acknowledgement and schedules the call; **Cancel** abandons it. Real outbound calls are screened this way automatically — see [DNCR Washing](/contacts/dncr-washing).

***

## Step 6 — Read the results

Every call — test, inbound, and outbound — lands in the **Call Log**. Each row shows the call's type, status (for example **Completed**, **Voicemail**, or **Rang Out** — the full list is at [Call Statuses](/calls/statuses)), the script and version that ran, and whether it was a **Live** or **Test** call.

Click a call to open its details:

* **The recording** sits at the top — press play to hear the whole call.
* **Details** — the **Call Summary** (a written recap of what happened), **Call Objectives** (whether the goals you set on the script were met), and **Metadata**.
* **Transcript** — the full conversation, speaker by speaker. Transcripts are automatically polished shortly after the call, so the text you read can be more accurate than what was heard live.
* **Analysis** and **Data Collection** — post-call analysis results and any data your script collected, once configured.
* **Notes** — space for your own notes, plus a **System Notes** section Voxworks adds automatically for things like calendar bookings, SMS, or transfer attempts during the call.

If the summary shows your agent said something you didn't expect, edit the script, run another test call, and publish again. See [Call Details](/calls/call-details) for everything on this screen and [Call History](/calls/history) for filtering and saved views.
