What a section is
A section is a group of questions asked together — for example Screening, Care experience and About you. Sections give the questionnaire its shape in the outline and on the logic canvas, and can each open with a short spoken introduction. Every new survey starts with one section, Main survey. A short survey can live entirely in it. Sections are separate from the fixed sections (Agent, FAQs, Behaviours, Gatekeeper and Closing), which every survey has and which can’t be moved or removed. - On Setup → Questions, click the + beside Outline (“Add section”).
- The New section form opens. Enter a Section title.
- Click Add section (toast “Section added”), or Cancel.
Editing a section
Click a section’s heading in the outline to open its form. The form notes the section’s key and question count: ”… The key is fixed: rules and the compiled agent name this section by it.”
Click Save section (toast “Section saved”) or Close.
Writing a good intro line
- Make it a statement, not a question. The interviewer reads it and goes straight on to the first question, so “Now a few questions about your last visit.” works; “Is it OK if I ask about your last visit?” invites an answer nothing is listening for.
- Keep it short. One sentence is usually enough.
- Put notices here rather than in the greeting. A recording or privacy notice sits well in the first section’s intro line, so the greeting stays a single, clear consent question. For a notice the respondent must acknowledge, use a Display question instead.
Section keys
Each section has a key —main for the first section of a new survey. The compiled script refers to the section by its key. The key is set when the section is created and can’t be changed, so renaming the section’s title never breaks a rule.
Order
- Sections are asked top to bottom as they appear in the outline. Reorder them with Move section up / Move section down.
- Questions within a section are asked in the order they appear. There’s no question shuffling within a section — only answer options and battery items can be shuffled.
- To show a part of the survey to some respondents only, use routing rules on its questions: Jump to question past them, or Hide question on each one. See Routing rules.
The first section and the study name
The Study name in the Agent section is what the interviewer calls the survey — for example in the line a respondent hears when they call back. If you leave Study name empty, the first section’s title is used instead, and if that is empty too, the survey’s name.Next Steps
